What Is Cricut Smart Vinyl

This article is brought to you by Lizzsews

Vinyl is perfect for spicing up' blanks, for decorating, designing, or labeling almost everything. It's easy to cut and easy to weed and can be applied to almost any surface, but now your projects are even smarter with smart vinyl.

Recommended read: What are blanks

Smart vinyl comes in the same types as regular vinyl, removable, permanent, and iron-on. It's applied and used the same once cut.

The difference?

Smart vinyl can be cut without a mat- but only on certain machines. With the Cricut Joy, Maker 3 and Explore 3. On the Maker 3 and Explore 3, vinyl can be 13" wide, compared to the 12" wide on the mat.

The cuts can also be longer on each machine, without the restriction of the 24" or 12" mat. On the Cricut Joy, cuts can be a max of 47" long. On the Explore 3 and the Maker 2, cuts can be a max of 141" long.

Basically, these machines have a sensor that allows them to sense the presence of the smart vinyl, meaning that you can cut without a mat!

But keep in mind that you still will need a mat to cut your scraps. If you're cutting anything less than 13" x 6" you'll have to use a mat, and you'll want to cut your vinyl scraps!
