Whether it’s a birthday, holiday, or just a sweet craving, this cake pop recipe has you covered. Made with Betty Crocker cake mix, this is the most reliable method for beautifully finished cake pops!
This recipe relies on the heat of your cake after coming out of the oven to turn the cake into a dough that makes delicious, fluffy, and flavourful cake pops.
Yield: ~16–24 cake pops
Ingredients:
- 1 box Betty Crocker cake mix (any flavour you like!)
- Candy Melts (chocolate, any colour for dipping)
Optional add-ins:
- 1 Teaspoon Vanilla extract (for extra flavour)
- Betty Crocker Icing (to improve dough consistency)
- Sprinkles (for presentation)
Directions:
1. Bake your cake according to the instructions on the box. Add the vanilla extract to the batter before baking for added flavour.
2. Once the cake is out of the oven, transfer it immediately into your stand mixer bowl. Using the paddle attachment on the lowest speed, mix until your cake transforms into a sticky, soft cake pop dough.
π‘This step takes patience! Keep going until the cake pulls together like dough (not crumbs). This could take 10 minutes or longer.
3. Add icing 1 tablespoon at a time, mixing between each addition until the dough can be rolled into smooth balls without cracking.
4. Scoop and roll dough into balls about 1½ tablespoons in size. Set them on a tray, plate, or baking sheet.
5. Melt your candy melts in a small microwave-safe cup or bowl:
- Use 40% microwave power
- Start with 20 seconds, remove & stir
- Continue melting in 10-second increments (40% power) until silky smooth
π‘ Take your time here, the chocolates continue to melt once outside of the microwave and need to be stirred to properly melt. If they are microwaved for too long they can seize up or burn and you will not be able to reach the desired consistency.

6. Dip the tip of each cake pop stick into melted chocolate and immediately insert into a dough ball about ½ to ¾ of the way through. Repeat this process for each cake pop.
7. Coat each pop by dipping into the melted chocolate. Gently tap the stick on the side of the cup to remove excess. Place into a stand and add sprinkles immediately before the chocolate cools. Repeat this for each cake pop.
π‘ Spoon chocolate over the bottom first, then dip.
π‘ If you don't have a cake pop stand, try using some Styrofoam and poke holes into it to make your own stand!

8. Allow to cool completely, then enjoy!
